Account book includes: dates; names of railroad companies and railroad car numbers materials that shipped the lumber; names of companies that purchased lumber, their locations and accounts; types of material purchased, including size, length, feet, price, and amount; and freight, rebate, and net costs. The vast majority of lumber was shipped to Pennsylvania.

Justus S. Stearns worked as an errand boy for Eber Brock Ward, President of Pere Marquette Railroad Company. Ward gave him a small lumber mill after Stearns demonstrated that he was a good worker. Stearns eventually married Ward's sister-in-law, Catherine Lyon, and served as Bennett's first post master. Bennett, in Lake County, Mich., had a post office and logging mill (Stearn's Siding) on the Pere Marquette Railroad, 1887-1900. Bennet, Mich. no longer exists. (For further information see Going ...

Ward, Eber B., 1811-1875

In 1807 Eber Ward married Sally Potter (d. 1818). Together they had four children, including Emily (1809- ) and Eber Brock (1811-1875). At various times, the family lived in Upper Canada, Salem (Ohio), Detroit, Bois Blanc, and Mackinac (Mich.). Eber served as the lighthouse keeper at Bois Blanc, 1830-1831. As a young man, Eber B.
